  • Sales Contract

This topic explores the contract entered into by the consumer when s/he buys goods or services. In the first section sales contracts are introduced under a number of separate topics. The next section alerts consumers to some specific types of contracts and the final section guides the consumer as to the course of action when things go wrong.

  • Price labelling

Prices of goods and services must be clearly made available for consumers. What are the rules that the salesman must comply with in the method of determining and displaying prices?

  • Distance selling

"Distance Selling" refers to the purchase of goods or services from a trader who is not physically present. The purchase can be made using a telephone, fax, television or internet. When dealing with a trader based within the EU, there is legislation to protect your consumer rights, in addition to your existing consumer rights. This section will provide you with information on your consumer rights when shopping from home.

  • Advertising

Advertising is everywhere! - on the radio and TV, in newspapers and magazines, on the walls of our towns cities, at the cinema, on the buses and bus stops and on the internet and so on.... This section examines the rules associated with advertising.

  • Safety of products and services

When you buy a product or a service, you legitimately expect that it not dangerous. What are the rules which ensure this safety?

  • Settling disputes

You bought a new hi-fi system and when you get it home it does not function as it is supposed to; you ordered books from France via the internet and you never received them; you receive an invoice for an abnormally high mobile telephone bill or you had booked a holiday, however, when you got there it is not as described in the brochure. What can you do? How do you resolve consumer problems? What can you do if your rights are not met?

  • The Single Market

The European Union and the Single Market impact on the lives of every citizen and consumer in the member states. Do you know what the Single market is? What are the principles that control it? What are the consequences for consumers?

  • Consumer Topics

A range of consumer rights topics are explored in the two sections: Consumer topics 1 and 2, for example: door-to-door sales, the protection of the privacy (data protection), dubious sales practices, promotional sales, labelling, privatisation and certification, competitions, contests and the cross-border trade.
