You will find a large number of articles in this module which are designed to help you learn about consumers’ rights.

  • Sales contract

    There are a number of rules protecting you, the consumer, when you enter and conclude a sales contract. This section of the website considers in what situations the salesman has to comply with these rules. It also considers the contractual obligations for both parties involved in the sale.

  • Price labelling

    When thinking about buying goods, consumers need to know how much their purchase is going to cost them. Once a consumer knows how much an item is going to cost, they can decide whether it is good value for money and think about whether they can afford to make that purchase. Traders should display prices for most of the products that they sell and they are not allowed to give consumers misleading information about prices.

  • Distance selling

    Nowadays, it is possible to buy products from all over the world. You could buy a laptop computer from Canada, a book from Australia. This choice for consumers is now possible thanks to the development of the internet and other methods of distance selling. This section considers the rules that apply to distance selling and the risks associated with distance selling.

  • Advertising

    Companies spend millions of pounds every year advertising their products. This section looks at different types of advertising and the rules that need to be complied with. This section contains information on the organisations that ensure advertising rules are complied with and why these rules exist.

  • Safety of products and services

    When you buy a product or a service, you legitimately expect that it is not dangerous. What are the rules which ensure this safety? Standards are produced so that consumers can be assured that products are manufactured to a minimum specification. Products are tested to ensure that they are safe and do not contain components or ingredients that could be harmful when they are used.     The following scenarios may sound familiar: You’ve bought a new stereo system and when you get it home it doesn’t work properly You booked a package holiday but it was nothing like the description in the brochure. What can you do if you face a situation like this? This section aims to help you understand how you can resolve any consumer complaints that you may have.

  • The Single Market

    Today, the European Union and the Single Market are part of our everyday life. Do you know what the Single Market is? What are the principles that control it? What are the consequences for consumers? This section introduces the Single Market and how it creates opportunities for consumers to purchase goods and services in other EU countries.

  • Particular issues

    When we buy goods and services, there is usually a chain of other people involved and this can increase the chances of something going wrong. This section covers a number of consumer related activities that you may come across in everyday life. These activities include door-to-door sales, personal data protection (privacy laws), promotional sales, labelling and certification, and cross-border trade.
