Charging for travel

Both central and local government have been working to develop more sustainable travel measures. This will help to ensure that future travel will be more integrated and that the impact on the environment will be reduced.

Some of these measures include a financial charging element that encourages people to change their travel behaviours and also helps to provide the money needed to improve our transport system in the future.

More and more car users are finding that they have to pay extra charges when they travel. Congestion charging

Congestion charging is becoming a more common way to control the amount of traffic that enters city centres. London operates a congestion charge system to drivers within certain zones. The main aims of this charge are to reduce the levels of traffic and to encourage people to use different modes of transport. Road and bridge tolls

There are a number of tolls in place across the UK which means that a charge is applied for using certain roads or bridges. The idea of tolls date back centuries when communities relied on bridges or pathways so they contributed to their upkeep costs.
